ENGLISH LANGUAGE ARTS
11th and 12th Grade ELA is delivered in a contextual fashion in many of our career and technical education programs. Using the collaborative teaching model, as upheld by the Michigan Department of Education, highly-qualified English teachers work together with the technical instructors to deliver instruction, aligned to the technical curricula's segments and standards and Common Core State Standards in ELA.

- ELA SYLLABUS - This is a combined English Language Arts syllabus developed by our ELA instructors Sarah Bernstein, Janie Lesinski and Jennifer Stairs.
- AUTO BODY REPAIR - This is a sample writing unit for Auto Body Repair created by ELA instructor, Jennifer Stairs. The culminating activity is an argumentative essay regarding waterborne vs. solvent-based paint. The essential question is, "Should 'your' local shop update to waterborne paint or continue using solvent based paint?"
- AUTOMOTIVE TECHNOLOGY ACADEMY - This is a sample assignment for Automotive Technology created by ELA instructor, Jennifer Stairs. Students are asked to complete a compare and contrast assignment with an inspection report. As a culminating activity, students are required to inspect a vehicle brought into their repair shop and write a business letter to the automobile owner explaining the repairs.
- BUSINESS CAREERS - This was a two-week lesson on Risk Management and Insurance Fraud used in Business Careers. Week One, "Insurance Fraud" was developed by Business Careers Instructor, Julie Gauthier and Curriculum Supervisor, Mary Smith. Some of the sample skills used were: brainstorming and developing a graphic organizer as a class, listening to a lecture and preparing notes, defining unfamiliar vocabulary used in presentation, and reading/summarizing an article. Week Two, "Liebeck vs. Mc Donalds" was created by ELA instructor, Janie Lesinski. Students were asked to read a provided document library and asked to create a position paper about the Liebeck vs. McDonald's court case.
- INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY - This is a sample speech project for Information Technology developed by ELA instructor, Jennifer Stairs. Students researched an IT topic and had to explain the concept or procedure to an audience, demonstrating their technical knowledge.
- WEB AND GAME PROGRAMMING - The is a sample writing assignment for Web and Game Programming created by ELA instructor, Jennifer Stairs. Students are required to read a textbook chapter, "Network and Computer Attacks" and re-write the information in the style of writing for the web.
